We are all aware of the fact our William has tied the knot with the beautiful Kate. However is Marriage important in today's society? Would you take the plunge?
Marriage was once a major event in a persons life. It was highly religious, taken place under the eyes of God, and divorce hardly ever occurred. So why are people who are not religious getting married? And why is divorce so ordinary? And, do traditional, religious ceremonies still exist?
PTF talked to Lauren Stratten, who is getting married this summer. She tells us why she taking her vowels, and what it means to her, in the video clip down the bottom of this article.
However PTF also asked some other people of Kent what they thought on Marriage. Would they do it? And if so, why? Here 's what they had to say:
Emily Poynter (student at Canterbury Christ church) :
"I think Marriage is romantic but if you're not religious it is perhaps a bit hypocritical? I am however not religious but still want to get married because of the romance. Also I'm not bothered about the traditional order of things, I would happily have children and a house before marriage".
Kara Ingleby (A care assistant in Kent) :
"I think marriage isn't a must, because in my opinion it is not necessary and can mess up a relationship instead. I only want to get married once and make sure it's real love, but I do want to have a decent job and a nice house first. I'm not very religious but I would like to get married abroad or have a big church wedding, as it is something I only plan on doing once"
Lauren Stratten is a devote Christian and has her own views on Marriage. She is Marrying in August this year at the age of 21. Heres what she had to say:

Nicole Muller (student of Canterbury Christ Church) :
"I want to get married because it's romantic but I'm not religious so I wouldn't necessarily follow all the traditions and get married in a church or anything! However I do think, if you've been with someone a long time I don't see why you wouldn't get married eventually".
Sarah McKenzie (Rochester, Kent) :
"I want to get married one day because I want to make that commitment to the person I love, and I want to wear a big dress on the day! On the other hand I think if you love someone why do you need to put it down on a piece of paper, it's not going to change how you feel about them, you will still love them regardless.
"Although I'm saying this, divorce is expensive so maybe not such a good idea!"
James Murray (student in Canterbury) :
"I think marriage is good because it's the ultimate commitment to another person. But I do hear you get taxed a lot which puts me off, although my mum wouldn't be happy if i didn't get married".
So it seems in todays society Marriage is not a priority, and people would rather be financially stable before entering a world of commitment. Although the idea of having a partner for life and the security of a marriage is a dream many of us have. Some marriages do not always have a happy ending though and divorce is now common and acceptable.
Divorce can be seen, by some, as a 'get out of jail free' card on a marriage, but surely marriage should not be looked on in that way. Divorce is decreasing over the last couple of years but researchers claim it is due to financial reasons. Mark Keenan, the Managing Director of the online divorce firm, has said the housing market also plays a big part. If people cannot sell their houses, they cannot release equity for their settlements which then prevents them from filing their divorce case. So if you got married would it be for life or would you rather become a divorcee?A non religious wedding on a beach is a popular choice from many. |
